At St. Regis Falls CSD, our mission is to provide a safe, healthy, and supportive environment where every student can thrive. Following our March 12, 2026 letter regarding the health risks of vaping and energy drinks, we have been closely monitoring our hallways and facilities to ensure these standards are met.
Since our last update, data collected through increased hallway and bathroom monitoring has revealed several concerning trends that require immediate attention:
1. Early Exposure: Students as young as 11 years old have been found in possession of and/or using vapes within the school building.
2. Unauthorized Distribution: We have discovered instances where parents are condoning or supplying vapes to children, who then allegedly distribute them at school and off school grounds.
3. Facility Misuse: High school students have been congregating in high school and elementary wing bathrooms and gathering in groups of 2-4 students within single stalls.
4. Procedural Gaps: Students are frequently misusing the classroom and lunch room sign out procedures—visiting lockers up to 20 times per day or signing out to one location but actually going to other destinations. Furthermore, many students are using cell phones to contact parents for pickup due to illness, bypassing the mandatory visit to the school nurse.
To address these issues and maintain a drug- and tobacco-free schoolhouse, the following changes are now in effect:
1. Restricted Hallway Access: Students in grades 7-12 must refrain from using the elementary wing hallways and bathrooms during the school day unless they are attending a scheduled class or meeting in that area of the school.
2. Restructured Hall Pass System: The district is implementing a new system to ensure students are in their designated locations at all times. This new system will be in full effect starting on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
3. Strict Adherence Cell Phone Policy: Using a cell phone to contact parents for pickup, or any other reason, is a violation of school policy and New York State guidelines. If a student feels ill, they must report to the nurse's office. The nurse will determine if the student should be excused and will make the official contact with parents. All students are welcome to come to the Main Office to contact family members at any time during the school day.
We remain proactive in protecting our students’ health because we want them focused on their futures rather than nicotine dependency or the physical toll of high-caffeine products. According to the CDC, the nicotine in vapes can harm adolescent brain development, and the American Academy of Pediatrics warns that energy drinks have "no place" in a child's diet.
Our doors are always open. If you have any additional ideas to help us make our schoolhouse the best that it can be, we welcome you to reach out and set up a time to meet.
We can only make our schoolhouse a safe and healthy place when we have the partnership of our parents and families. We thank you for your continued support as we work together in the best interest of our children.
